Join the Tolson Chess Club!!!

We’re meeting in the Tolson Multi-Purpose Room starting at 4 pm Thursday, April 11 – and playing chess each Thursday till about 5:30.

There will be at least three Thursday chess sessions – April 11, April 18 and April 25 – and we hope to keep Tolson Chess Club going till the end of May 30th. If you don’t know how to play, we will teach you!! Any young person from second grade through high school is invited to attend. There is no cost to be in Chess Club.

Parents/Guardians and Students, please take note: In Addition to chess being a lot of FUN for everyone to play, here are just some of the Benefits of Chess…

More than “just a game,” chess has an amazing way of developing higher-order thinking skills in those who play regularly. Doctoral and other studies have shown that chess enhances concentration, problem solving, patience, deferred gratification, creativity, planning, pattern recognition, cause/effect awareness, impulse control, sportsmanship, self-esteem and resiliency in the face of adversity. Chess also levels the playing field between girls and boys.

All the skills mentioned above help students be successful in school, in other sports and games – and in life itself, including eventual vocations. The game of chess is not a cure-all, of course, but it can be an important piece of young people’s success puzzle. In a digital age too often dominated by devices and screens, chess can be a great way of making friends, bringing people together in personal ways to play an exciting game.
